Attending The First Sergeant Course

March 24, 2010

Hey everyone, it has been awhile since I posted something. I am currently attending the DA First Sergeant Course in order to get my "M" identifier. This is a mandatory requirement to be a First Sergeant. The active duty course has gone away since they are teaching some of the course in the Senior Leader's Course (formerly ANCOC). Now to attend the FSC active duty personnel must do it at a reserve or national guard training center. I am attending the course at Ft. McCrady which is right outside of Fort Jackson, SC. The course has been a good one, you have to conduct an information and decision brief, an exam on FBCB2 and brief an oporder using a sand table. Prior to attending this phase 2 you have to complete phase 1 which is 31 modules using distance learning.

How do you find out what NG/AR installations are providing the 1sg course?

Besides the National Guard posts listed farther down this blog, I know that Fort McCoy (USAR) has the FSC for FY11. I was just there a couple months ago for BSNCOC and some of the instructors for that course were preparing for the change over.

    1SG Howell,

Thanks for the info. I'm getting ready to attend this course at the same location the end of July. Just wondering what the daily schedule was like and what the lodging and eating situation was like.

I know of three NG sites that teach FSC. UT RTI school code 956; PA RTI school code 1012; and SC RTI school code 1014. I hope this helps.

This information about National Guard training sites is not true. The course is run by USASMA, and it is taught at Fort Bliss. It is also taught via VTT at various other ACTIVE DUTY installations. In fact, there is currently a course at Fort Bragg as of the date of this post. Try to get your facts straight, before you put out bogus information to other soldiers. While some NG units may run the course, the main proponant is USASMA at Bliss. You can reference this information by clicking on the USASMA page on AKO, and you can search the course on ATRRS. Pull your head out of your fourth point of contact.

Harris, it is not "physical year." It is "Fiscal." Also, post the MILPER message number, so it can be referenced.

Will, if I did not have the correct informationI would not have posted. I attended the course andI talked to the reserve instructors and was whatI was told. Some of the classes currently were or are being taught by USASMA will incorporated into the Senior Leader's Course and there will not be an FSC being taught on active duty. Maybe instead of you barking at people spend your time doing the research just like SFC Harris did.

42A, as I said, there is a course currently being taught at Bragg. Here are your own words:

"The active duty course has gone away since they are teaching some of the course in the Senior Leader's Course (formerly ANCOC). Now to attend the FSC active duty personnel must do it at a reserve or national guard training center."

My initial response was a reply to your post from March of this year. Your information was not correct; my statements are correct. In the future, this will change, but as of August 3rd, 2010, there is a course on at least one major installation.

No further response is necessary on your end.

I was just offered this course today in what will probably be my only chance at going. The report date is in 6 weeks. For those of you that have done this course, is it feasible to think someone could accomplish phase 1 in that short of a time span. Having done 3 years as an Inspector General (the "assistance" aspect deals with most issues faced by a 1SG) and just having completed BSNCOC should help, but I've seen "31 Modules" listed on a previous post. Any input?

You could do it 6 weeks, there are 31 modules, just have to do one or two a night. They are not that difficult.

        Thanks 1SG,

I am assuming that this phase 1 is just 31 modules of information and one test at the end with no other requirements?

SFC Ross, unfortunately not, at the end of all modules there is an exam. But you do not have to complete them in a certain order, you will get 3 chances to pass the test, if not then you must contact the ALMS admin to have it reset.

      Top,

So I'm tracking 31 exams with 3 chances per or is one exam per module (31) with an additional test at the end as the "final exam" that allows for three attempts?

SFC Ross, no final exam. When you complete the last module and exam, you are done.

When I received phase one I had three and a half weeks to complete it...and had plenty of time to do so...it's not that difficult. you can do it easily in 6 weeks.

I ran into a new "snag" once they submitted me for the course. Every time I tried to start phase I, it gave me the message that I can not view the materials until 1 Oct 10, which is 7 days prior to my report date for phase II. My company was unable to rectify the situation so they cancelled my phase II. I now have from 1 Oct until 31 Dec to complete Phase 1 and we are hunting for a new Phase II date prior to our next deployment, so it is no longer an issue. Thanks to all for the heads-up though.

I am due to attend the 1SG resident course at Ft McCoy in Janraury. Can you tell me how many exams are taken in this resident course. I understand they have greatly reduced the number of exams. I hate Army Exams!!!!

At Ft. McCrady, we had to do one decision brief, one information brief, an FBCB2 excercise and a sand table excercise. That is it, so not sure if it is the same where you are going.

I have been enrolled in a 1SG course in January and am trying to get the PH 1 computer based training underway. Every time I attempt to access ALMS to launch the course, I am unable to do so. Is this an issue with anyone else?

1SG Hudson - I attended BSNCOC in Ft. McCoy in May and had a chance to look over the 1SG Course Material (and ask questions). 1SG Howell's experience at Ft. McCrady is the same as what Ft. McCoy is doing.

SFC Williams, make sure you are using the Internet Explorer Browser to access the course. if you're using Firefox, it will not record the score after each exam.

I just completed Phase 2 of the FSC at Ft. McCoy. The class was great. The SGL's at McCoy were professional as always. I've learned more than I thought I have already knew.

ok, so the army changed up all of its NCOES. In the Guard you need to attend FSC in order to be promted to 1SG. According to the new system ALC+SSD-4 will get you your "m" If you attended ANCOC you still have to attend FSC. But the course is going to be phased out in the next year. Am I right?

Just completed my first 9 DLs for FSC. About two hours per DL, unless you ace the pretest.

@rich, I'm not too sure about the new system but yes, the 1SG course is done after FY12 (according to the FSC instructors). If you check ATRRS, Fort McCoy is done after this FY, Camp McCrady is only running the course to the end of this Calendar year (3 classes in 1ST quarter FY12), and Fort Indiantown Gap is running the course until May 2012 (which seems to be THE last scheduled class). I was told that I wouldn't need the FSC since it was being eliminated (I had already done ANCOC), but wanted to attend the course anyway.

MSG Ross - can you expand on what is "done"? Does that mean that both AD and RC FSC are ending after May 2012? So, those of us who desire the FSC will not be able to attend ... so ... our NCOES goes SLC--->USASMA?

Does anyone know if the completion of FSC Phase 1 goes on the ERB or do you need to have both FSC Phase 1 & 2?

The course intro states that all hours completed in the DL will be put on your Certificate/1059 at the completion of Phase II.

I've been a 1SG for over two years and my new CSM justs informed me that I needed to have my "M" identifier removed because I haven't completed FSC. I did Phase I but not Phase II. Where can I find a MILPER message that explains the change in systems. If I could find a Phase II prior to deploying I would.
