Traveling in the Great State of Ohio, Week One
November 18, 2010
So I flew into Cleveland and waited for Drill Sergeant Short to arrive. While I waited I checked in to the USO there and was warmly greeted. I had a great time talking to everyone there and would like to thank them for staying past the closing time so I had somewhere to sit and someone to talk too. Drill Sergeant short arrived and we were on the road headed to our first destination, Findlay, Ohio.
In Findlay we attended A fitness and health expo that was open to all the surrounding schools. Drill Sergeant Short and myself held a push up competition. The students had one minute to complete as many push-ups as they could. The students that attended were very eager to participate and I really was impressed at the fitness level and endurance that they displayed.
The winners of the push-up challenge were both from Columbus Grove High School. Both Stephanie Etzkorn who did 41 push-ups and Gavin Winclua who did 60 push-ups won Army I-PODs for their amazing display of fitness and motivation.
We then went to Piqua, Ohio where we talk to the Greenville High School JROTC. These students were very eager to find out what it was we were there to do. Drill Sergeant Short and I talked with 5 classes and they were very interested in the fact that the military will pay you to go to school and you can attend school while actively serving at home or abroad.
We then traveled to Mentor, Ohio and conducted a pull-up challenge at another health and fitness expo. Again, I was impressed with the eagerness of the students. I saw students come into the gym three and four times through out the day to continue to try out our event and talk to the educators and other vendors. I had a great time talking and exercising with these motivated and smart students. We even had some students set up appointments with the area recruiters.
Major General Campbell presented a plague to coach Triviasonno at Mentor High School as well for his and the schools support the programs of educating and providing physical training and fitness to students in the area.
I had a great time during my first week in Ohio, and I can only hope that my second week Is even better. We have more health and fitness expos to do and alot of high school and future Soldier events. If you are in the area and would like to come and talk to a drill sergeant, educator, or recruiter then please stop by and see us. Look for my week two post next week.
