Amman- This entry is focused on sharing information for other FAO still in their language training at DLI. I’ve been in Amman for almost two weeks and am close to finishing the embassy’s inprocessing. It’s similar to the Army’s in that your information has to be entered into several databases for tracking purposes and for expected services, but it’s not instant as some of the information has to go to the host nation for processing as well. The offices in...read more

I spent most of the day returning from a short - but needed, and appreciated - family vacation. We didn't go far, but we did enjoy spending some quiet time together hiking, reading, and enjoying some beautiful views (and the season's first snowfall). On the way home, while listening to NPR, I caught the replay Dr. King's 'I Have a Dream' speech from 1963. I'm a bit ashamed to admit I'd never heard the whole thing, but I listened today and it got me...read more

As an ILE student, we study a variety of subjects from leadership to military history and most recently force management. During a recent block of instructions, we focused on the joint capability and integration development system (JCIDS) as well as the DOTMLPF group (doctrine, organization, training, material, leadership, personnel, and facilities). Interesting to me was how DOTMLPF provides insights into foreseeable requirements and indentifies gaps. These gaps can then...read more

This past week I packed the car and made the 4-hour trip from Fort Bragg to Virginia Beach, VA to begin the Army music officer Captains Career Course. Many of my colleagues speak of dreading the time spent at the "school house," but I have to confess that has never been my perspective. I relish the opportunity to step back, reflect on past experiences, gain new tools and insights, and interact with colleagues. I confess that my perspective may be shaped somewhat by...read more

I apologized I have slacked on writing here. Things have been pretty busy, and hopefully in the coming week or so I can provide some more info on that. Realizing that I was slacking I began taking pictures today with the intention of photographing something from every case. As the day progressed however, I only got in 3. To give you an idea of what today was like the following procedures were done: - 4 exams (1 also included a 3 surface amalgam) - 1 evaluation on...read more

Our next trip was to Teotuhuacan, an ancient ruins site about 50km to the northeast of Mexico City. Teotuhuacan was incredible. The below picture is an internet download. I was unable to get up quite that high to get the whole landscape view. The grounds are huge and the two primary temples are massive. The word Teotuhuacan is an Aztec word (in the Nahuatl language) and means birthplace of the gods. The city is not an Aztec city, it predates...read more

Okay, it has been a very very long time since my last post. For that I apologize. Since my last post a lot has happened to me in real time. I think at the time of my last post, my daughter had just been born. She's is a very mobile and precocious nine month old. I graduated from my master's program and I have begun CGSC (ILE). So, I have a lot of things to blog about, but before I can get to those more recent developments, I...read more

Had the opportunity to deploy and work for a year as the Band Programs Officer in Baghdad. Beginning in May of 2009, I worked in the C1 at MNC-I (later becoming the J1 at USF-I). I was fortunate to work with some incredible folks in a joint environment, who often spent 12-14 hours a day, 7 days a week doing everything they could to accomplish their mission. All the missions within our office had direct impacts on quality of life of our Service Members and Civilians...read more

In January, I like to start with a few new goals and resolutions for the coming year. Some of them are reoccuring, like a list of 12 books I want to read. I adjusted that one this year to reading one biography a month. I also usually select a few events I want to attend, some local and some a little farther away. Two events I have pinpointed this year are the Augusta Half Marathon, here in Augusta, GA, on February 26th, and the Iron Girl Triathlon in Atlanta on May 20th. Since I started...read more
