Our next trip was to Teotuhuacan, an ancient ruins site about 50km to the northeast of Mexico City. Teotuhuacan was incredible. The below picture is an internet download. I was unable to get up quite that high to get the whole landscape view. The grounds are huge and the two primary temples are massive. The word Teotuhuacan is an Aztec word (in the Nahuatl language) and means birthplace of the gods. The city is not an Aztec city, it predates...read more

Okay, it has been a very very long time since my last post. For that I apologize. Since my last post a lot has happened to me in real time. I think at the time of my last post, my daughter had just been born. She's is a very mobile and precocious nine month old. I graduated from my master's program and I have begun CGSC (ILE). So, I have a lot of things to blog about, but before I can get to those more recent developments, I...read more

Had the opportunity to deploy and work for a year as the Band Programs Officer in Baghdad. Beginning in May of 2009, I worked in the C1 at MNC-I (later becoming the J1 at USF-I). I was fortunate to work with some incredible folks in a joint environment, who often spent 12-14 hours a day, 7 days a week doing everything they could to accomplish their mission. All the missions within our office had direct impacts on quality of life of our Service Members and Civilians...read more

In January, I like to start with a few new goals and resolutions for the coming year. Some of them are reoccuring, like a list of 12 books I want to read. I adjusted that one this year to reading one biography a month. I also usually select a few events I want to attend, some local and some a little farther away. Two events I have pinpointed this year are the Augusta Half Marathon, here in Augusta, GA, on February 26th, and the Iron Girl Triathlon in Atlanta on May 20th. Since I started...read more

I reported to ILE at Fort Lee, VA on 04 JAN 2012 and I'm a part of class #12-001. There are a total of 64 students in the class with all branches being represented and most functional areas as well. These students come to ILE with a wealth of experience. The class is mainly made-up of Majors but we do have some Captains and Lieutenant Colonels. We complete the core phase of ILE in the next 3 1/2 months with a graduation date of 18 APR 2012. Once the core phase is...read more

I am concerned that with downsizes that is coming with the Army. I hope that we do not run into the same problems with SO many of our GREAT Soldiers having the numerous deployments that many of them have already seen.

Todays Soldiers are more likely to be highly trained experts in combat operations. Most of these professionals receive a great deal of intrinsic satisfaction from their work serving others. Soldiers are the main weapon of today’s Army. They are the key to success in every mission to defeat the enemy at war. Their stamina does not come just from the food, recreation, training or water. It is comes from the desire to defend a nation and...read more

Christmas and the Northwest's almost never-ending rain have collided to bring me back to a minor hobby I had in college. Though it pains me to think about how long ago it was, I have to admit it's been nearly 17 years since I did any rock climbing. I was never great, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. I picked it up while spending a semester at the Coast Guard Academy (a story for another day) and found it really suited me at the time. I took a class and then stuck...read more

Well, I’ve had a few months to study the market in Northern California since leaving Minnesota. From the South end of the Sacramento Valley to the Southern third of Oregon and from the West Coast to the Nevada state line, one thing remains constant – mountains and trees; BIG trees. The people though, vary in personality and patriotism by county up here. I had been told – and even bought into the fact than one of counties, Humboldt is and will always...read more

While my wife and I were driving near Fort Myer we happened to go by Arlington National Cemetery. I had never seen the cemetery during the holidays, and I had to stop for a moment. As I looked out upon the rows of perfectly lined grave stones with wreaths placed I had the opportunity to switch gears for a moment. At this time when there are so many things vying for attention, this scene made me pause and consider the ultimate sacrifice that so many have paid in the...read more
