The USO made this holiday season even better for our family. Through the generous donations from people in the area the USO provided tickets to local holiday concerts and games. We chose to take advantage of tickets to 2 events. My daughter and I attended a Christmas chorale concert sponsored by the Russian Embassy at the Kennedy Center. A few days later I was able to attend the Redskins vs Vikings game on Christmas Eve with my son (believe it or not he was happy)....read more

I hope everyone had a very merry and safe Christmas weekend! I went home for the weekend, and learned I am allergic to my family's new dog, a 75 pound "puppy" Rottweiler named Tank. On coming back in to work today, I browsed through my news and saw that the FLEP board results were released last week. Congrats to my friend Sommerville, I know he's going to be a great JAG officer. I didn't make the list this year, probably for a number of reasons, but there's...read more

It is pretty normal in most military units to have some kind of a holiday function. In our clinic we combined business with pleasure and had a great day. First thing in the morning we began with unit training. We had a great lecture on infection control and sterilizers by MAJ Kim. Next the assistants reviewed dental instruments. Then the festivities began at the officers club. Following an all-you-can-eat buffet (many people in the...read more

Each year in December the Army selects the next iteration of specialty residents. All the Army programs are accredited through the American Dental Association and are recognized outside of the military upon completion. Army training differs a little from the other services because our programs are spread across the United States at different bases, while some of the other services consolidate all of their training at one or just a few bases. The Army selects 18 months in...read more

My advice to anyone who asks me about the Army is to really look at what you want for the future. If you have a family and want to stay home, pick reserves. If you aren't sure if the military is for you, go reserves. Just know that at least for me, when I was looking at reserves, I didn't have as many job choices. It was when I finally settled on active did more jobs open up. Speaking of jobs, your MOS is very important, it will be the job you are trained and tasked to do....read more

The St. Louis chapter of the organization...read more

In the midst of a crazy time of new babies, courts-martial, and assorted office fires to put out, I found out last week what my next assignment will be. I'll be headed back to the JAG School to teach criminal law! This is a GREAT job, and one that I honestly didn't expect to get. Not only am I looking forward to getting back east and back to a place I know (instead of starting from scratch again), I'm also looking forward to getting back into an assignment that...read more

Our son, 2LT Mike Gabbard, graduated from Ranger School Friday. It was a gorgeous morning at Ft Benning, and I was one of several hundred happy Ranger fans who watched the famous Rangers In Action demonstration, followed by the tabbing ceremony. Class 1-12 started with 385, and a little over 150 finished. Mike's mom and I are so proud of him! Rangers lead the way!

All the federal services have ADA accredited specialty training programs. Each service does their training a little differently. The Army has their specialty programs spread throughout different Army bases. The Navy has all of their training programs located at their post-graduate dental school at Bethesda. This building is the location of the Navy programs. Just inside of the lobby is a room dedicated to FDR and the history behind the creation...read more
