Tomorrow's game...our annual reminder of what college football used to be like. No agents, no megabuck contracts, no uncontrolled hype, no outstanding arrest warrants or jail sentences. Just sixty minutes of hard-played ball, followed by careers and lifetimes dedicated, on both sidelines, to one united purpose. That's Army-Navy. Below is a link to a good article in today's McPaper about THE Game....read more

A tribute to the Army's newest Rangers! Had a great visit with our own Ranger tonight, looking forward to pinning that tab on him tomorrow morning :)

Waiting for my plane to fly down to Ft B to see our son Lt. Mike Gabbard, who graduates from Ranger School tomorrow. Can't wait. Mom and I are SO proud of him! Tabbing pics to come :)

I'm not sure how many of you have ever seen a flag raising on an Army base, but it happens every morning. Reveille is typically broadcast on speakers around the base for the whole community to hear :) This was taken at Ft. Myer, Va. When Reveille starts everyone on post is supposed to stop, face the flag and salute. If you are driving you should stop the car and get out and salute.

I had a little bit of an exciting time on a recruiting trip up to Columbia School of Dentistry this past week. I was flying out of Reagan National Airport and I had checked in at home. I made it through security and all the way to the gate when I checked the monitor and saw that my flight had been canceled due to mechanical issues (picture below is the airport). Normally if I were flying on my own I would have had to find the next available flight and sit around the...read more

Monterey-One of my habits I’ve acquired comes from the Army’s program to develop leadership. The most important pillar of the program is the self-development one does after some introspection and identifies one’s shortcomings. Because of this, I read Dale Carnegie’s, “How to Win Friends and Influence People,” and Elbert Hubbard’s, “A Message to Garcia,” before every new assignment and reflect upon my application of their lessons. I...read more

This past Saturday I took the LSAT. Sometime in the future I'd like to perhaps attend law school and switch from Signal to the Army JAG Corps, so I've spent the last ten weeks or so on some serious studying. One of the things they tell you when you're studying for the logic games is that most people figure out logic games as part of everyday life. Nowhere is this more true than if you work in the Army. Just this past week, I was doing some practice problems, the ones...read more

I haven't talked about cases that have been going on in the clinic much. I guess there is a couple of reasons: 1) Not being able to connect my camera to government computers at work means that I have to try to do the pictures at home - a little more effort 2) Seeing so many things each day - I sometimes forget to grab the camera. Today I had a new experience. I was seeing a foreign officer from a Latin American country. In that country they use a type of metal in...read more

I attended the Steve Harvey Foundation Mentoring Weekend and it really opened my eyes on why programs like this are needed. Young men from the ages of 13-18 years old were selected out of 4,000 applicants. 100 were selected for this special weekend with outstanding leaders throughout our communities. The army led the way with at least 20 different primary mentors, and one guest speaker. Looking at the look in some kids eyes, you felt the hunger of wanting guidance...read more

It’s a typical day at the office. LTC Khanullah Shuja, General Karimi’s senior aide, is explaining his military genius to everyone within earshot. In excruciating detail he recounts one of the hundreds of battles he fought during his six years of company command. I’ve heard the story about a dozen times and each successive account his exploits are more superhuman. However, the ending never changes - Shuja ultimately saves the day with a brilliant...read more
