Although we didn't celebrate it on Thanksgiving, last week we had a Fort Belvoir Dental Clinic Command (Fort Belvoir and Fort Myer) get together to celebrate Thanksgiving and also get some training done. The training took up most of the morning and covered such exciting topics as cold weather injury prevention, and infection control. Hello everyone, hope you are having a great Thanksgiving! Today in Brunssum, The Netherlands players from my battalion and I played in the Annual Turkey Bowl flag football game. Our opponents were the Air Force who are stationed at Geilenkirchen, Germany and they have won this game the past 5 years. I played in last year's game and we lost 2-0 which was very disappointing. It's that time of year again! Congrats to the class of 2010, who will start pinning on their little black bars today. No more "But I'm just a new LT" excuses to be used, no longer will people laugh a little when you say things like, "Well when I did this...." or atleast not quite as frequently. With the recent realignment that occurred Fort Belvoir and Fort Myer now fall under the command of the Fort Meade DENTAC. Recently our commander sponsored a continuing education day for all the dentists within his command (Maryland, N. Virginia, and Pennsylvania). We had presentations in Periodontics/implants, Prosthodontics, and Oral Pathology. Even learned how the different specialties compare to general contracting

One of the things I have enjoyed while being in the Army is the activities that the Army sponsors. Although I have never lived on an Army base in my 10 yr career, activities like the 4th of July, regular athletic competitions, sports programs, camp outs, hikes, and other activities add an additional aspect of events we can participate in. I'm wrapping up a week in San Antonio with much of the Army's Trial Defense Service (TDS), talking about defending sexual assault cases. Over the last couple years, the Army (and the military generally) has made a big push to ensure our Soldiers remain safe within the ranks and has gone to great lengths to educate everyone about the dangers of sexual assault and to punish those who commit those crimes. This past weekend was a long, four-day weekend for most of us. We took the time to stop and thank veterans that served before us, and took time to relax with our families before all the big holidays come up. For me, Veterans Day is about remembering the sacrifices made by all the servicemembers who dedicated themselves to fighting for our freedom and way of life. I went into this Veterans' Day weekend watching a Soldier being found guilty for murdering three Afghan civilians while deployed last year. Staff Sergeant Calvin Gibbs was charged with being the ring leader in what the media has dubbed a rogue 'kill squad.' The defense of these Soldiers at trial fell to the Army's Trial Defense Service and a collection of civilian attorneys who took on these cases.
