In Lakeland, Florida, The US Army Field Band performed in a large community hall to a packed crowd. SSG Carmen Russo, one of the band's phenomenal trombonists, is played a piece called Colors by Bert Appermont. Carmen is aboslutely rocking; Colors is one of my favorite pieces the band is playing this tour. The Soldiers' Chorus presented a concert for students of Florida State University on November 5th. I had a gig with my brass group earlier in the day, but my evening...read more

Traveling such a beautiful part of the country makes tour go by quickly. Our concert in Daytona Beach was at the Peabody Auditorium, just 1/2 a mile from the Atlantic. The audience loved us and it was a treat to play in a nice hall. I didn't get a chance to take many pictures before or during the concert, but I thought I would offer a glimpse of what the post-concert teardown is like. The band is pretty darn efficient when it comes to clearing out after a show and leaving no trace. All...read more

The U.S. Army Field Band continues its series of concerts across the southeastern United States. On Veteran's Day, the Soldiers performed for a packed house near Atlanta. We often invite local music educators to serve as guest conductors. Professor Blake Gaines from Morehouse College leads the band. Aiken, SC is the retirement home of the sixth Commander and Conductor of The Army Field Band, COL(Ret) Bill Clark (left). COL (Ret) Gary Lamb, former director of...read more

As we approach Veteran's Day 2010, The U.S. Army Field Band travels through the grassroots of America. While we often perform in world class theaters, our favorite venues are gymnasiums in small towns. In Graceville, FL there were over 500 people packed in to the gym (from a town of less than 2,000). This guest musician from the local high school receives a custom made set of dog tags like all of our student guests. Army Musicians do all of the same things as other...read more

The Musical Ambassadors of the Army, The United States Army Field Band and Soldiers' Chorus, are working their way city by city back to their headquarters at Fort Meade, MD. The photos on this blog are shot by MSG Rob McIver, a Tenor with the Soldiers' Chorus. His wife, SFC Sarah McIver is Flute Section Leader with the Concert Band. How do they manage an average of 100 days on the road each year with a newborn? Sarah's mom has become a road warrior and...read more

The U.S. Army Field Band, the Musical Ambassadors of the Army, continue their series of performances in Florida. Before many concerts, Soldiers tell their Army story and take questions from the audience as SSG Pam Terry is doing here. Veterans and their Families stand during the Armed Forces Salute. Proud Air Force Veterans stand to be recognized. After the concert, people line up to spend time chatting with Soldiers. One of our newest Soldiers, SSG Teresa...read more

The Musical Ambassadors of the Army are telling the Army story throughout the state of Florida. The 5,000 miles of this trip are made possible by our dedicated transportation specialists. Mr. Larry Brown, a retired Soldier, is a dedicated New Orleans Saints fan. Here he's listening to the game and is definitely not happy. At most concerts, local high school or college students sit in on one selection. This young man is showing great focus as he...read more

    October 23, 2010

I wish each of you could have been on the delightful Baranof Island in the city of Sitka, Alaska last week for the Alaska Day celebration. This week long event commemorated the peaceful transfer of Alaska from Russia to the United States in Sitka on Oct 18, 1867 and was themed as “Celebrating Sacred Ground.” It is an important event for the country and Army Alaska, so your 9th Army Band was in attendance ready to serve. During our brief 3 days in Sitka, we led the parade...read more

A couple of weeks ago, I had a nice article written on my team in Alaska. The best pull out quote was when I said , “You know something’s important to the Army when an Army Band is there.” It is about service and building team. This can be tough work if you aren't prepared... You ever heard of a "Diva". This can be a very bad stereotype for a musician or a person( I remember the recent Snickers commercial with Aretha Franklin and Liza Minnelli) I figure...read more
