    By: Major Andreas Wooten

So all of the sudden I am doing this blogg from Haiti, inside the US Embassy. Got the word last Sunday that I would be leaving, I was actually out off-roading when the message came in. So I got my first off-road ride in my Jeep, and I am glad I did, otherwise it would just be sitting in the back yard. (hope this is a good photo that you all like). My wife and my daughter went with me. I know my little girl had a great time!!! She was great all day long!! So anyway, back to Haiti, got the...read more

  • CHANGE 5,000

OK, so I was supposed to go to Haiti as part of the forward deployed HQ of US ARMY SOUTH. Well, that didn't happen. We spent long hours and days planning, preparing, having briefings and meeting, waiting on planes and boats. In the long run, everything changed multiple times, the situation on the ground, higher command intent and missions along with the availability of aircraft, ships and barges. Bottom line is I still have my bags packed but I am still here, still going to planning meetings...read more

  • Haiti and Civil Affairs

    January 20, 2010

I think most of us have heard the Chinese Curse "MAY YOU LIVE IN INTERESTING TIMES". Well, for me it’s not a curse, it is my job. I would assume by now that everyone has heard all about the earthquake and ensuing problems in Haiti. Well, this whole situation there falls right in line with my job here at US ARMY SOUTH as a Civil Affairs planner. As a Civil Affairs planner and operator, I am knee deep in the coordination of ARMY SOUTH personnel and personnel moving in to...read more

  • Happy New Year

Happy late new year to all. Mine was great and I hope that everyone reading this had a good one also. The Army All-American Bowl was yesterday, I wish I could have been there with the jeep and to see all the cool stuff the Army always has, but it just was not going to happen this year. I heard it was a really good game hope some of you were able to watch it or better yet get a chance to go. The whole thing is quite a party, especially in downtown San Antonio. Well, I...read more

Happy new year to everyone and Merry Christmas (a little late) to all. Overall things here have been pretty good, I am working on my packet to extend for another year at US ARMY SOUTH.  I hope that it goes through because I am looking forward to doing the HMA missions coming up in the 2nd QTR of this FY. Had some issues with the Jeep, something electrical, it cranks but wont stay running once I let off of the key.  So, here we go chasing the rabbitt down the hole again.  I did manage to get...read more

  • Humanitarian Demining Action Course

    December 7, 2009

    By: Major Andreas Wooten

Sorry, once again I have been off on TDY (and just a bit lazy also) so I have not posted as much as I would like. This particular TDY trip I am back at Ft. Leonard Wood Missouri. This trip is to actually take the course for Humanitarian Demining Action (HMA). Honestly when I first got here I was a bit skeptical for the first two days about some of the times and distances that the instructors said would be needed to clear mines of of affected areas. I now am totally convinced by everything they...read more

I just received a link from the Brazilian Foreign Liaison Officer (FLO) to a Brazilian web site related to the exercise I was observing in Brazil earlier this month. It’s all in Portuguese but there are some great pictures and with goggle translation you should be able to get it in whatever language you want. http://www.exercito.gov.br/03ativid/operacoes/itapeva/cmse.html Thanks for reading and let me know what you think.

  • Back from Brazil

OK, got back from the trip to Brazil last week and it was a great time.  The Brazilian Army is great and a very professional force.  Our escorts were awesome at getting us around and made sure we were able to see all aspects of the exercise, taking us to see some sights is Sao Paulo and most importantly making sure we were well fed.  It seemed like no matter where we went food was the first priority. We spent the first day in Sao Paulo, talk about a huge city, from what I am told and read, 11...read more

  • SECOND CAR SHOW / BRAZIL

    October 28, 2009

    By: Major Andreas Wooten

My wife and I took the CJ out to the second show this past weekend.  We had a great time and it was a worthwhile event for charty.  I hopefully got some of the jitters out of me by driving the CJ (the"new-born") all the way across town and back.  The show had almost 400 participants and over 40 classes for judging.  I got a bonus that day, I won 3rd place in my class (LL all 4X4s).  All in all not bad for the new guy. The CJ drove great, felt strong and was a blast on the freeway.  People...read more

  • Humanitarian Mine Action

    October 26, 2009

    By: Major Andreas Wooten

I went to Ft. Leonard Wood, MO earlier in the month for the 1st annual Humanitarian Mine Action (HMA) Conference.  Honestly it was a bunch of upper level policy information and legal jargon from 3 and 4 star Headquarters along with info from the Department of state. However, it is an absolutely amazing facility.  It had more examples of mines, IEDs, mine detectors and bomb suits than you can shake a stick at.  I didn't have my camera with me so the picture are not great but you get the idea. ...read more
