You'll have forgive this brief aside into a personal - and very nerdy - topic. And before I go any further I have to give you a little background ... I am a tech geek. I really get into the latest gadgets, and even if I don't blow tons of money on them any more, I like to think I'm keeping up with what's new. Rewind to summer 2009, Palm (yes, maker of the original Palm Pilot (I had a knockoff by Philips)) releases the Palm Pre smartphone. It tanks in the marketplace,...read more

What a week! Our Military Justice instruction held an Article 32 hearing, two (2) courts-martial and a sentencing case. Every class member will serve as lead trial or defense counsel once, assistant defense or trial counsel once, and as a witness more than once. We all know the case front to back by now, and everyone did a great job of advocating for their client (the Army or the accused) when given the opportunity. Likewise, we had some really great witness...read more

Class started this week with a PT test. For those unfamiliar, it is composed of two (2) minutes of push-ups, two (2) minutes of sit-ups, and a two (2) mile run. Until the new Physical Readiness Test is authorized, both the push-ups and sit-ups have authorized resting positions. As such, stopping doesn’t end the test as long as the authorized resting positions are utilized. One platoon went on Monday and the other Platoon went on Tuesday. Physical fitness...read more

I mentioned last time that I wanted to write a piece about officership and ethics. But in order to get it right, I think I need ot have a questions answered first. I want to know who out there cares whether or not we, as Soldiers and officer, hold ourselves to a set of ethics/values that the rest of America doesn't seem interested in practicing themselves? Do you? It seems many people recognize and congratulate us for our service, our willingness to do hard things...read more

Our Military Justice instruction is full force now. Some class members have already had the opportunity to use their advocacy skills in a Pre-trial Confinement Hearing. All class members have gotten to use their writing skills to provide a Memorandum to a Commander. The Military Justice block of instruction is very different from Ad Law. Our grade is a combination of participation, writing assignments, advocacy and a written exam. Almost every day includes a...read more

We have now completed two weeks of our JAOBC training. I apologize for the delay in getting this post completed. As many of you who have followed JAOBC blogs in the past, not much changes from week to week in Charlottesville. We spend five (5) days a week in class most of the day, and PT eight (8) out of every ten (10) weekdays with one day of recovery and one day of road marching. The second week was no exception. We took a test on Thursday in General...read more

I've been back from ILE for exactly a month now and I've finally got a chance to come up for air. I don't remember my job being quite so hard ... I hated the last week at Fort Gordon, but in retrospect it was actually pretty good. We were all anxious to get home (and out of the ridiculous southern heat) but managed to hold it together through our last tactical planning exercise. The biggest event to hit my last week there was moving out of the lodging on post...read more

The 185thJAOBC has completed its first week in Charlottesville. Last Saturday was zero-day for those class members competing for an opportunity to attend either Airborne or Air Assault training. When it was over, there were roughly 11 Airborne competitors and 7 Air Assault competitors. Obviously more class members showed up to compete, but a few were excused almost immediately for various issues. When the workout was over, others had either fallen out or been tapped...read more

Day 13 We formed up for a safety briefing at 0650 and were on the road by 0715. 105 miles and 90 minutes later (feel free to do the calculation you may think I was speeding) we were at The Judge Advocate General Legal Center and School (TJAGLCS). We fell in again at 1000 when the entire class had arrived. The day at Charlottesville included administrative briefings from the Associate Dean for Students, a couple staff sections from the Commanding General’s Staff,...read more
