The last few weeks here at ILE have been busy. I've got one more follow-up report from MilBlogCon and a book review coming, but I've been busy here with tests, group briefing projects, and research for a required (if relatively short) history paper. But even with the readings and the class requirements, we've had plenty of time here to exercise! This is primarily because most of us are here in Georgia without our families and away from our regular jobs for 4...read more

The American Bar Association has just unveiled a new website - ABA Home Front - designed to offer information and resources aimed at and related to military families. It includes information on the Service-Member Civil Relief Act, a variety of family law issues, a directory of state-specific legal services, and a referral service for pro-bono (free) legal advice. Coming from the nation's premier organization of legal professionals, this is likely to be a great source of useful...read more

The desert of Kuwait, where I am deployed, is a long way from home. The army provides 15 days of leave. It has been a great opportunity to re-connect with family. The lush green hills of New England are beautiful. I spent a few wonderful days in Vermont with my wife. I am now looking forward to completing my mission and then getting back to my family.

Today is Military Spouse Appreciation Day! As we prepare to give a special thanks to mothers across the nation, take a moment to thank the spouse of a service member -- particularly if s/he's your spouse!!

Despite my brief joustingwith former SECDEF Donald Rumsfeld at the Military Blogger Conference on Saturday, the Q&A he did with us was really pretty interesting. (The full video is available at http://vimeo.com/23132551.) My first big take-away was that he's a pretty charming guy. You might complain that he comes off as too-flippant, or not serious enough to be a senior strategic advisor to the president, but I suspect his public persona (like most of us) isn't an...read more

2 May 2011 Given that I’m just now catching up to real time with my posts, I’m likely to be well behind the power curve in terms of the news regarding the death of Osama Bin Laden. This post isn’t going to be mere political or strategic commentary, nor will I wax on about my own opinion on the matter. I’ll simply say that...read more

29 April 2011 The Gauntlet. I can’t say the faculty builds it up as any sort of intimidating event, but rather intentionally keep everyone partially in the dark about things. We were told about the general structure of the day, but details were intentionally sparse, which was the beginning of a larger lesson to be taught throughout the day....read more

28 April 2011 So the big event of the day (aside from the op law exam) was the airborne OML APFT, which happened this morning. Rather than telling how that went, I’m going to take liberties with the rapt attention you’re paying and divert into an explanation of the post title. Too often I stretch to come up with a title that loosely relates or describes what happened on a particular day-I understand...read more

27 April 2011 Since our final APFT for airborne is tomorrow, we have the day off to rest. The rest of the class also finally had its dream come true: PT was cancelled (a day later than the rumor). Unfortunately, we still had to get up early in order to take our class photo. Despite overcast skies, the picture came out pretty well. (You can easily pick me out without me needing to point out the...read more

Airborne PT had its second OML event today: the pull-up test. For those who know me, you know I’m built roughly like an ostrich. I’m around 6’3” and run a lot, and am neither built, nor historically have been good at pull-ups. Despite consistently working on them throughout airborne PT, I managed to let myself get mentally psyched out as I hopped onto the bar....read more
