My civilian job coworkers think I'm a badazz (no cussing, I'm trying to turn a new leaf) because I'm in the Army. Therefore, I was sent to a career fair for veterans with recruiter because 1) I speak in acronyms, 2) I could make a plant talk back to me if I really tried hard enough, and 3) since I'm in the Army I should know what skills folks have, right? What I saw and heard broke my heart. There were thousands of people, veterans mind you, that showed up for...read more

I realize that it’s been a while since I last posted anything, but we’ve been busy with training in both the days and the evenings, and the internet at the MWR was down for about four days, so this is the first time I’ve been able to take the time to write anything. My apologies. We’ve been doing a lot of training lately that requires visual focus and mental understanding. Before Thanksgiving, we went through driver’s training on the MATV, which...read more

The past two weeks have been, well, they have not been ideal. Between being involved in a three car pile up on scary I-45, having whiplash for the second time in a month, a minor melt down at Saks Fifth Avenue on my day off (don't ask, just know that Depression is a pain to deal with and leads to embarrassing moments), a very sick Beagle, it's all just made me want to throw in the towel and head for the hills. In an effort to combat this and to enjoy the approaching Thanksgiving...read more

A Play-By-Play: Battle Assembly Weekend Parte Dos
November 15, 2011
By: First Lieutenant Kayley Nammari
The joy continues... Sunday 0400: Alarm goes off. Hurry up and get dressed and put my hair back in a bun. Perhaps the gate guard will confuse me with a man again (it happened, I reamed him for it and his lack of attention to detail; plus, what man drives a Prius while listening to the Christian music station?). By 0430 I am out the door. 0545ish: Arrive at Ellington Field and have a quick debate in my head about if I want to run by Starbucks for a delectable Caramel Apple...read more

Salam alaykum! Man Zabett Griebel astom. Culture is an interesting thing. And it's cool to be able to observe other cultures in order to learn more about your own. Recently, we've begun working on our Dari language training. Written above, it basically says, "May God's peace be with you. I am sergeant Griebel." Learning the language hasn't been too bad. Having a masters degree in English definitely helps me understand...read more

As much as the Army frustrates me, I love it. To be more accurate, I love the people in it. In honor of Veteran's Day this year, I'm going to take the time to thank some of the Soldiers in my life. I encourage you to do the same. Thank you do my dad, The Sarg, for showing me from such an early age what it means choose the hard right over the easy wrong, to live a life of integrity and to take pride in what you accomplish. Thank you for showing Taylor...read more

So I knew going into NOV battle assembly that it was going to suck the life blood out of me. No joke. I tried to make the best of it though, but it's now Monday morning and my eyelids keep closing on me. I will preface this by noting that I emailed my team leader telling him I did not receive the monthly newsletter nor the new OPORD. He never emailed me back before the weekend. Saturday, 05 NOV 0215: Yes, you read that right. 0 freakin' 215 in the...read more

To the left is a picture of my immediate family and me from our Departure Ceremony, which was held at Joint Force Headquarters shortly before we left Colorado for Ft. Polk. Even though we are a rather crazy bunch at times, I do love my family and am greatly appreciate of their support and encouragement. And, as I write this, I am praying for my brother and his wife – that they may get pregnant soon because I am wholeheartedly convinced that they will be outstanding, loving...read more

Déjà vu is funny. Some smart brainy people claim that it doesn’t exist. They say that it’s actually just the brain observing, thinking, and processing things faster than reality allows. They say that it seems you’ve already experienced it because your brain knows what is and will happen before it happens milliseconds later. I disagree. I’ve been through enough experiences that I’ve either 1) dreamed about, or 2) already...read more

(I just spent the last half hour working on this blog post when FireFox decided to crash on me while I was in the "final editing" phase of writing. So, with frustration and disdain for technology, I'll try again.) Remember when you were finishing your senior year of high school, and you had that moment of realization that it was all about to end. You'd soon have to say goodbye to your friends, family, and the life you once knew to move on to something new,...read more
