  • Co-ed Ranger School: My thoughts

    May 23, 2012

By: First Lieutenant Hannah Guarendi He

Just a few days ago marked the 69th anniversary of women serving in the US Army. About the same time, the Army Chief of Staff General Odierno announced that a plan is in place to permit females to attend Ranger school. The opinion storm that followed that announcement kind of depressed me. There are accusations that Ranger School in general is going to be "feminized", as in, made easier, either for the females or for everyone. Some say that Ranger School's mission of...read more

  • Quest for Truth and Justice - AR 15-6 Style

I was recently appointed as an investigating officer for a 15-6 investigation concerning possible adultery between two Soldiers in my battalion. I sort of think of 15-6 investigations as a rite of passage of sorts, along with completing a FLIPL. A big part of that is we've had so many of either going around recently, not to sound like we're a bad unit, we aren't, we just believe in investigating things other units might turn a blind eye to. Whether that's so all of us...read more

  • Gas Chamber, Gas Chamber Complete

    May 17, 2012

By: First Lieutenant Hannah Guarendi He

This morning my company completed our annual NBC training requirement. This is quite possibly my least favourite day of the year. The dread the night before of knowing the next day you have to go through a gas chamber, the trying on of the gas mask that makes your face burn because the prior user didn't bother to clean it properly, making notes everywhere to remember to wear glasses instead of contacts......the whole process is just awful. Because this is a yearly requirement, some people...read more

  • At the Milblogging Conference

    May 14, 2012

By: First Lieutenant Hannah Guarendi He

This past weekend I got to attend the Milblog Conference in Arlington, VA. For some reason they let me on a panel to talk about blogging in the military today, which kind of evolved into a discussion about what kind of social media bloggers are using today to get their stories heard. Many of the other people who were also on the panel had been blogging about the military for almost ten years, so I definitely felt a little out of place. On the other hand, I never really had to...read more

  • Greetings from Utah, the Beehive State!

One of the cool things about being in a Chemical battalion is that we get to go to different places for training, rather than just the TAs in JBLM. This time our travels bring us to beautiful and expansive Dugway Proving Ground, Utah. The sheer size of this post is incredible. It's about an hour's drive just to get to where we did the gunnery tables, and that's not even on the edge of the area. An additional benefit of being out here is not only do we have great Chemical...read more

  • The stuff on my desk

    May 1, 2012

By: First Lieutenant Hannah Guarendi He

Sometimes I can't really think of something to write about, so I start thinking about boring things to write about. Today, I decided to write about the stuff that I have on my desk, since this is where I spend so much of my time. Going from left to right: - Several binders holding hard copies of past training guidance from Corps and Brigade. As the training officer, I get to read Corps guidance and update Brigade guidance every quarter. We just finished the training guidance for the...read more

  • Milspace Rendezvous 2012

    April 24, 2012

By: First Lieutenant Hannah Guarendi He

This past weekend I was lucky enough to be able to attend the Milspace Rendezvous again, this year in Boston, Massachusets. In addition to all the long hours of discussion and sitting over my laptop reviewing forum details, the branch topic leads for the Platoon Leader forums took time to have some fun. I checked a few things off my bucket list (climbed the Bunker Hill Monument, attend a game at Fenway park, drink some tea in Boston) and also had the opportunity to reflect on how important it...read more

  • Currently Reading: "Monuments Men" by Robert Edesl

    April 5, 2012

By: First Lieutenant Hannah Guarendi He

Now that I have finished all three Hunger Games books, and fulfilling a random urge for some light fiction, I have finally gotten around to starting to read The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History, by Robert M. Edsel. This book is about the members of the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives program that fell under the Civil Affairs and Military Government sections of the Allied forces in Europe. Some reviews say this book is about a bunch of...read more

  • Everybody's rucking for the weekend

I meant to write this earlier, but I've come down with something awful and have been incredibly busy as well, so now I'm catching up. I wanted to write about my experience doing the 23rd Annual Bataan Memorial Death March out in White Sands Missile Range, NM. I flew out to El Paso last Friday and picked up my packet on Saturday. There were a ton of people there; I think they said they had 8,000 people register, up 2,000 from the year before. They had a couple of briefs during the day...read more

  • Remembering the Past for Women's History Month

    March 13, 2012

    By: First Lieutenant Christian Romeo

I got a call from the PAO Office (is that redundant? I'm sure it is, but it doesn't seem right to just say "PAO") last month asking if I'd be interested in being interviewed for an upcoming issue of the I Corps Field Report, a new publication the PAO Office is starting. He said they were interviewing different women all over post for Women's History Month and I was nominated for my two unusual hobbies: riding horses and running long-distance races. He also...read more
