Wrapping Another Week...of Being a Proud DA Civilian

By: (Dr.) Brian Hart, [U/DC]
Wrapping up a great start to a new (and shorter) week at work. Today, btw, is one year to the day from when I shipped off to go to Basic Training. Am waiting on any other possible opportunities to put on the uniform. Meantime, I am proudly working my Civilian job for the same Army I went off to serve...doing my part to protect my country. HOOOOAH

Where I work, the Army is providing support for me to attend classes at University of Alabama, Huntsville for another Ph.D. I already have one, in Astrophysics. I am now working to complete a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. The Army is training me through this process. I can't say any more about why, otherwise I'd have to kill you :-)

I must be nuts going for another Ph.D. degree. But the Dept. Chair was meeting with me the other day and he said...read more

Don't Get to Be a Soldier For Now...But Still Proud to Serve

RIght now, as I type this, my National Guard RSP unit is having weekend drill. Obviously, I am not with them this beautiful Saturday morning.

I received an Uncharacterized discharge for failing to pass the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) after a year. I am frustrated and disappointed at not being able to be a Soldier...for now, that is. Being 30 years old and having a medical condition is not a combination that lends itself well to being able to handle physical...read more

Being an Army Federal Scientist

By: (Dr.) Brian Hart, [U/DC]
Being an Army Federal Scientist is almost as rewarding as being a Soldier. I still get that same great feeling that I am doing something tangible to serve my country and to help outfit and protect my battle buddies downrange with the latest in gear and technology, all from the very bleeding edge.
I can't go into what I do anymore than that, but I will say that it's very satisfying and fulfilling work. We also train a crop of high school and college students each summer. I was...read more

So, where did I leave off last time? Oh right, I had seen a planetarium show when I was 10 years old and, from that moment on, I knew I wanted to be an astrophysicist. Deciding that kind of made me cringe, because my Ph.D. was a lot of really hard work! I am glad I got it though. It's given me the kind of confidence I need to make it as a Solider, because it shows me how I can set...read more

I know I am a newly-recruited E-4 (National Guard) but I am an Officer Candidate and I am also a DA Civilian who has been through loads of training on Operations Security and Communictions Security and I would just remind everyone who is posting Dates, Times, Places, Deployment schedules, and plans on this blog that this information is read worldwide and that the Adversary is very information-savvy. ...read more

You might say I am "the Astrophysicist who wears ACUs." (ACU stands for the Army Combat Uniform, those cool digital Camo's you see Soldiers wear on the battlefield.) You can also call me "Lurch" because at 6-foot-7, I am pretty dang tall for a Soldier. I serve in the Army National Guard, and my MOS is 09-Sierra, Commissioned Officer Candidate. I was impressed with what the Lieutenant had to say about how males and females serve in the Army. I know a Female Airman, SSG Jenifer Carter (USAF Ret.), who could kick my butt any time of any day, even thought she is a 100% disabled veteran of Operation Provide Comfort I & II with up to twelve decorations for combat. 2LT Obermier's point is that females and...read more
