Final Thoughts from ESPN

By: Jev Valles
Looking back on my experiences at ESPN, it was one of the greatest four weeks of my life. I wish it could've been longer. I made some great friends and even better contacts for down the road. I learned a great wealth of knowledge during my AIAD. It not only confirmed many of the lessons I had learned during my semester of Negotiations under MAJ Donigian but it also helped me to reassess what I thought I did know. Towards the end of my internship, I travelled to New York City with my boss,...read more

Finally Joined by Fellow Interns

By: Jev Valles
For the first two weeks, I was the only intern at ESPN. I was all by myself in this apartment complex. It was kind of a new experience because for all my life, I have lived with someone; my roommate or my family. All of the interns are good people. They are all outgoing and personable and know alot about sports so our sports discussions are interesting and can get intense. We had our Intern Day which was the first day for them. We got taken on a tour of all of ESPN and got to play Stump the...read more

By: Jev Valles
This doesn't really involve negotiations at all. This was just one of the coolest things I did at ESPN. Like the Indy 500 car drivers visiting, many athletes will be at ESPN for various reasons. I have had many cool experiences on an everyday basis. I'll see Trey Wingo browsing Facebook at lunch. I made small talk with Tedy Bruschi in the cafeteria. Tommy Smythe gave me his prediction for the winner of the World Cup (Germany, which almost happened). Every day is a new experience. It...read more

Negotiating With a Client at the Eastern Conference Finals

By: Jev Valles
I've learned that negotiations take place in all types of settings. I have sat in on negotiations over the phone. Many of the VPs have described negotiations that take place in boardrooms or restaurants. However, in this one instance, I had the good fortune of being present at a negotiation between members of our team at ESPN and representatives from Comcast. My co-workers LaMarr and Caryn told me that it is important to get clients out of the boardroom setting. They are more relaxed and...read more

Indy 500 Car Drivers Visit ESPN

By: Jev Valles
Working at ESPN for my AIAD isn't always work. There are many opportunities for a sports enthusiast such as myself to experience some once in a lifetime opportunities. ESPN is an incredible place to work and it was only my second week at ESPN when I opened up Internet Explorer and saw the ESPN internal home page. I saw that the Indy 500 car drivers were all going to be in attendance at lunch so during my lunch hour, I decided to stop by and check it out. How many times do you get to see...read more

What I've Been Working On

By: Jev Valles
As part of the Comcast Team at Disney/ESPN, my role is to be a sort of utility player for the team. Primarily, I have been working on compiling information for the team in their upcoming re-negotiations with Comcast. Some information that I have been researching involves DMAs or Designated Market Areas. Nielsen divides the country into these regions to collect data on viewers and subscribers, or subs as they are more commonly known. I collected data on all Comcast subs who watch Disney/ESPN...read more

Veterans Day Ceremony at ESPN

By: Jev Valles
ESPN has a large group of veterans from every part of our Armed Forces. They have an employee group at ESPN called the ESPN Veterans Group which allows them to maintain the bonds that held them together during their times in the service. On May 19th, ESPN celebrated their first Veterans Day Ceremony. It was only my first week at ESPN but I was taken aback by how many people attended and recognized the service of all those past and present. The president of ESPN, George Bodenheimer spoke a few...read more

By: Jev Valles
My first day at ESPN was one of the coolest experiences ever. I was surprised to see all the people and departments that it takes to make the leader in sports entertainment like ESPN work. My contact at ESPN is James Rollins who is a former Naval officer. He is a good guy and is incredibly knowledgeable in the business. The department I am part of is Affiliate Sales and Marketing, specifically Field Sales. I work with their Comcast Team under the direction of LaMarr Stinson....read more
