By: Kayley Nammari
This past weekend, the Hubs and I ran in the Texas Half in Dallas. Y'all, it was so incredibly fun! Sure, the wind was out of the north at 20 mph and it was frigid but I really and truly enjoyed every minute. My goal was to not stop and rest at all and I did it! Around mile 8, I looked around and thought, "I totally get why this is so addictive. It's fun!" Sure, that last mile into the wind uphill hurt like hell but crossing the finish...read more

By: Kayley Nammari
These past few weeks, I've received emails and a blog comment asking about what is my work out routine and how do I accomplish scoring high on the APFT. Thanks to C Riggs (shout out, girl!), I wanted to dedicate an entire post to this topic.

I hear it all the time that guys complain that the female standards on the APFT are too weak. I kind of want to call BS. The female body is made completely different! I have an extra layer of fat, breasts, and hips (well, I...read more

I was talking to my dearest mother last weekend and told her how I applied to Teach For America. "Funny you say that, Kayley Rae," she said, "your dad and I were just talking about how you don't seem very happy and content. That you're happiest in an academic setting."

I don't usually voice my political leanings on here (as this is an Army blog and not a Kayley-on-her-soapbox blog) but I had to share this because it's important and could directly affect you.

Writing for this blog is a privilege for me, and it's rather great to read the comments of those that read whatever cray (shout out to the new Jay Z and Kanye West album) stories us bloggers have to tell. The new year means a new slew of resolutions to lose weight. I even heard it from the guys at my unit. "I'll lose this spare tire!" This is great, don't get me wrong. America is not exactly known around the world for its trim physique but there are healthy and unhealthy ways to go about it. Random Thursday Thoughts

	1) My SGM told me I was a beast. Since my ankle has fully recovered from it's latest put-me-back-on-crutches injury, I took a PT test to stop my commander from glaring at me. Somehow folks doubted me. They thought I would barely pass. Say what?! I know, right! To prove all those guys wrong, I busted my you-know-what last Sunday morning. Result: 57 push ups, 92 sit ups, 15:40 run. That run time could have been...read more

A friend from BOLC tagged me in a bunch of photos on Facebook from our time spent at Fort Wegotcha. If you're headed out that way, take a look!

The Hubs came to visit for a weekend and it was my class' turn to host a social for the newest class of LTs. It was 80 themed. With karaoke. Really, it was epic.

By: Kayley Nammari
This past weekend the Hubs and I ran in the Jingle Bell Run here in Houston. It was 5 miles, which is no sweat because I've been running my bum off in preparation for the half marathon I'm running the Big D next month.

But it would have been wise to not eat that peppermint whoopie pie beforehand (I was celebrating my ability to fit into a dress I bought 3 years ago and the abs that have come out of hibernation).

By: Kayley Nammari
My civilian job coworkers think I'm a badazz (no cussing, I'm trying to turn a new leaf) because I'm in the Army. Therefore, I was sent to a career fair for veterans with recruiter because 1) I speak in acronyms, 2) I could make a plant talk back to me if I really tried hard enough, and 3) since I'm in the Army I should know what skills folks have, right?

The past two weeks have been, well, they have not been ideal. Between being involved in a three car pile up on scary I-45, having whiplash for the second time in a month, a minor melt down at Saks Fifth Avenue on my day off (don't ask, just know that Depression is a pain to deal with and leads to embarrassing moments), a very sick Beagle, it's all just made me want to throw in the towel and head for the hills. I noticed I have never done a play-by-play of what it's like on a drill weekend. Take all of this with a grain of salt because 1) my unit is not the "typical unit" and 2) I'm a LT, which means none of this is very enthusing. This is from this past Saturday when I had drill. Sunday will be posted tomorrow. I know, you're excited. Calm down.

This Sunday is the 10 year anniversary of that tragic day in our nation's history, 9/11.

I was 15 at the time and a sophomore in high school. I was sitting in my advanced trigonometry class when some of my peers started telling us about this plane that hit some building in New York. Being the smarty pants that I am, I remember saying, "It's called the World Trade Center and the largest structure in the city." Yeah, and I wonder why I was picked...read more

It's my 25th birthday today. To be honest, at first I was rather bummed. I woke up at 0430 to get ready for my civilian job, drove to Conroe, crutched my way up the stairs, and have been sitting in my office ever since. Nothing special. Nothing great. Just another day.

Then I realized how blessed I am to have such wonderful parents, family, friends, and my incredible husband. I grew up an Army brat. My dad is my hero for numerous reasons but the biggest being that he gave up so much time he could have spent with his family so he could provide us with the life he never had. This progressed to people actually joining and doing so well for themselves! I'm so excited that Army Strong Stories has helped bring information to those who need it and which has led to really wonderful results. See below:

Although I am not due for another HIV test, my unit thought it would make my day to have this done. Reserve Health sent me into the legit ghetto of Houston (not where I used to live, which was one of the wards that had Crypt gang tags everywhere but quaint coffee shops next to yoga studios), the kind where I am afraid to get out of my car, the kind where I have to be buzzed into the clinic. I thought about just not going in and telling my commander I was freaked the eff out....read more

Sigh...it's another drill weekend. As the only LT in my unit, life can be a little rough. Here's a snapshot of the last two days and what you (if you're also a LT) should not do:

	1) Don't listen to the couple Majors that tell you formation is at 0700 when really it's at 0645. They're not going but don't tell you that. You go down to the drill hall anyway so you're early only to realize EVERYONE is formed up and at parade rest....read more

	10) Although Nebraska may have lost to OU and Taylor Martinez had little motivation, it was still awesome to finally watch a college football game in person. Bye bye Big 12 and hello Big 10!

I am way behind on wishing everyone a Merry Christmas! (and none of the "Happy Holidays" politically correct stuff)

Because I'm a newlywed, this was the first Christmas that I spent away from my parents, brother, and grandparents. It. Was. Rough. My grandparents are getting up there in age (my Papa turns 90 next year!) and it breaks my heart that I live so far away from them. I came across a link on a friend's Facebook page about being a bone marrow donor and quickly clicked on it. I learned that as a member of the Armed Services, I cannot just go to my local blood bank and sign up; I have to use the channels through the Department of Defense. I googled this and came to this website: http://www.dodmarrow.org/

I've been a graduate of MI BOLC for two weeks now. What have I been up to now that I am not stressed about the state of my existence 24/7? For starters...

	- I finally had a date night with my husband only to poop out around 9 at night because, well, that's my bedtime. I really tried to stay awake at the wine bar, I swear!

This is my first Thanksgiving with my husband. It's also the first time I am making the entire meal myself and I am loving every single moment. As the lamb is marinating and the sweet potato wedges are baking in the oven, I find myself remembering how much I have to be thankful for.

What I wish I could say is, "Suck it, Trebek." Alas, I'm not the great Mr. Connery and also hold the lowly rank of a butter bar.

The logic of the Army, or lack thereof, never ceases to amaze me. Yes, you can have a four day BUT you must work the next weekend. Oh wait, we also think you need to come up with a 30 page presentation to brief that morning but are only going to give you an hour and a half to work on it. AND when you do brief it, we are going to rip you to shreds...read more

By: Kayley Nammari
Sometimes I think we take for granted the bravery of our military. The wounded are assumed to be healed. The fallen quickly honored. Life moves on.

There are moments though when all seems to stand still. The knowledge that a fellow soldier and 2LT has fallen to the atrocities of war made my mouth go dry and my eyes water this morning. 2LT Mark Noziska was killed in action in Afghanistan. I only knew him in passing. He went to a rival high school and received his commission from...read more

By: Kayley Nammari
I write this from my motel room on Fry Blvd in Sierra Vista, Arizona. Tomorrow at 0600 begins my MI Officer Training. To sum up how I feel: FRIGHTENED! My biggest fear is failure and I'm afraid to be that LT. We all know one, don't kid yourself. I've gone over my checklist for everything I need at least half of dozen times today, my APFT uniform is laid out, the alarm is set, and yet I still feel like I'm going to the youngest, least experienced one and...read more

I leave for BOLC soon. After reading over the course material I am fairly certain death is imminent. I'm not one to make excuses for myself but I think my MI Officer training is going to break me. This sense of dread and fear is new to me. Normally, I get a little anxiety. Where did my Hooah go?!

Perhaps I need to start working out to cadence again instead of the World Cup theme song "Waka Waka" on repeat? Or maybe I just need to face up to this...read more

I'm getting married in 24 days!!! LT Obie will soon become LT Nammari...which will more than likely be shortened to LT Nam...which I can see turning into LT Dan (said in Tom Hank's Forrest Gump voice).

I thought for quite awhile that marriage wasn't in the cards for me. I never met a man who was as determined and kind as my father. Then I met Mark, who from the very first conversation we had, showed me his easy going nature, loving heart,...read more

Last night was the premiere episode on the History Channel of a multi-part series called America: The Story of Us. Being the history nerd that I am, I made sure to tune in to watch.
The first episode gave an abridged version of the beginnings of our great country. The settlements of Jamestown and Plymouth were recounted along with the hardships those first settlers faced. The program then delved into the beginnings and causes of the American Revolution. Food for thought: http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/02/15/womens-work/?hp
I find that being one of two females in my unit enough of a challenge. Being the lowest ranking doesn't help matters any but we all have to start from the bottom at some point. Do I agree with Ms. Ross' opinion on the APFT standards? Being a hair above 5 feet and a buck o' 9 does not make me appear less capable than my male counterparts. As Thanksgiving quickly approaches, let us take a moment to be bear in mind what we as Americans are truly thankful for. For many, the luxuries and freedoms we so often take for granted will never exist. The many military personnel that are deployed overseas MUST be kept in our thoughts and prayers. I watched a really powerful movie about the war in Iraq on Sunday night called Taking Chance. It’s a story based on actual events about a Lt Col Marine who volunteers to escort the body of PFC Phelps back to his parents in Wyoming. The story of this 19 year old Marine who gave his life hit all too close to home when I thought of those I’ve trained alongside that have been killed and the cousin of mine who barely made it out alive. One of my absolute favorite things happens to be fireworks. I just can’t get enough. I love the ridiculously loud BANG, the explosion of color, the way everything seems to hang in the sky before slowly melting away only to have the process repeat over and over again. How could someone not love fireworks?!
I get told quite often that I’m a little firecracker of a person, bursting with energy with this loud laugh that carries for what I am sure is miles. So I think it only natural...read more

When I was very little, we’re talking 2 maybe 3 years old, I would curl up on the basement couch with my dad and watch the movie Bambi over and over and over again. My dad would nod off (perhaps he didn’t find Thumper as an intriguing of a character as I did) only to be awoken by myself. This cycle repeated itself time and time again. I would sit glued to the happenings on the TV screen as my dad would “check for holes in his eyelids.”

I found out on Memorial Day that a soldier I had attended basic training with had been killed in Balad, Iraq. My heart broke for this man and his family. Suddenly, Memorial Day had acquired an entirely new meaning.

When I was little, I had more Barbies than I could count. I recall a birthday Barbie with her long blond hair and pink dress covered in sparkling glitter, almost cupcake like. My favorite Barbie though was the complete opposite of birthday Barbie; her blond hair was not waist length but cropped short and instead of a pink tulle gown, she wore black combat boots and a flight suit. I can almost guarantee that this Barbie was not purchased by my grandma who applauded the fact that I would sport...read more

Me with SPC Powell and SGT Allen out and about in Osan on our afternoon off.

I went on an excursion to South Korea for Annual Training this year. Besides coming down with Bronchitis for almost the entire two weeks, it wasn't that bad and offered a great brush up on my MI skills.

I also got the opportunity to work with some awesome active duty soldiers, an afternoon to poke around Seoul (where I was stationed), and the chance to sample some very tasty Korean cuisine. I woke yesterday morning and got goose bumps while running. It's fall in Nebraska!

Where did summer go?! Many of my friends went on exotic vacations (Thailand! France! Canada!) while others tied the knot? I spent mine doing what I love, training (and no, I am not being sarcastic).
The highlight of my summer was spent at Camp Ashland, Nebraska attending Warrior Leadership Course. WLC is the first...read more

Less than one month until I leave for Warrior Leadership Course (WLC) at Camp Ashland here in Nebraska! I'm so pumped!
For those that don't know, WLC is two weeks of Non-Commissioned Officer training. You go over tactical exercises, land navigation, drill and ceremony, etc. For every topic covered, you're graded on your performance.
I am bound and determined to be an honor graduate! After WLC, I'll be eligible to put together my packet for the next round of E-5 promotion boards. It's...read more

It's the end of another drill weekend and I'm ecstatic! My unit had its APFT this morning and I kicked its bootay!!!! I've been working out like crazy, doing an hour of running followed by strength training. Apparently it's paying off.
I finally reached my goal of being awarded the coveted PT patch. In order to receive the patch, a soldier must score a 90 or above in all three events, for a total of 270 or more. I scored a 296. Before I had my tonsils out, I went out to Virginia to participate in my cousin Kyle's commissioning ceremony. Kyle was graduating from college at Longwood University and had participated in the Army ROTC program. He asked me (his favorite cousin) to be his first enlisted salute; it's kind of a big deal.

I've been on Vicodin and in bed for that last two weeks. There are currently two bottles of Codine in my bathroom closet. I've been grouchy, without a voice, in tears, unable to eat, and lacking sleep for longer than I care to go through. I had my tonsils out.
My tonsils have been huge and disgusting since I was 16 and sick for two months with a misdiagnosed case of Mono. They were full of infectious pits and crevices and would bleed sporadically. Returning to reality is so difficult at times. Waking up before the most of humanity this morning and getting ready for class, I had to sigh a little. Not only was it cold and cloudy out, I was tired and angry at myself for forgetting I have a quiz in my international economics class today. This attitude of mine is not helped out by the fact that I just returned from spending my spring break in Southern California.

One of the perks of being a soldier in the Army Reserves is that volunteer opportunities often present themselves. Today I spent my Saturday on RST status helping out at an event called The Polar Plunge. Sounds odd? Literally, it’s teams of people plunging into freezing cold lake water.

Drill weekend! Hooah!

Making the Decision

By: Kayley Nammari
I was raised an Army brat. My father is still active and going on 31 years this July! I am the true definition of an Army brat, I joined! But why?

My father was hell bent on trying to get me to enlist the end of my senior of high school. I would have none of it naturally. I can’t pinpoint exactly why I refused to; I believe it was just because I was 17 and not wanting to listen to my father.

Blogs are presumed to written by emotional teenagers who need to “express themselves” or disgruntled employees needing an avenue to vent. Typical.

But I’m not a teenager with raging hormones nor am ticked off at my boss; I’m here to tell my story, express my point of view, and share what it’s really like to be a soldier in the US Army Reserves.
