It dates from around 1600 during the Thirty Years' War in the Low Countries (Belgium and the Netherlands). The...read more

In early July, after most of the groups of The U.S. Army Field Band returned to Fort Meade, MD, having completed helping thousands of Americans celebrate Independence Day, I travelled to my alma mater in Potsdam, NY. The picturesque town of Wooster, Ohio is the site of this solo by SSG Tracy Labrecque. Thousands of Soldiers each year pack up their gear and say goodbye to their Families. Many will not return for a year or more and sadly, some do not return at all. Preparation for these departures follows a pretty standard pattern; you train and train and train to the point where you just want to get going and do the mission. Then there’s a point as it gets closer when the realization that there’s still so many things to do before leaving hits you. Recently I celebrated my 32nd anniversary of being a Soldier. It's kind of mind boggling to think of how different today's Army is from that of the late 1970s. When I arrived at the Sixth Army Band (a unit that no longer exists) at the Presidio of San Francisco, California (a post that is now a national park), over half of the Soldiers in the unit were draftees, soon to complete their enlistments.

One of the great things about an Army career is getting to live in foreign countries. My duties with Army bands have taken me to about 30 different countries, but my wife and I got to live in two amazing places; Panama and Germany. While I was Commmander of the U.S. Army Europe Band & Chorus, we lived in a wonderful town called Eppelheim, a suburb of Heidelberg. We made so many amazing friends there that we have returned at least once a year on vacation since returning to the States....read more

When the Soldiers of The U.S. Army Field Band are not on the road touring America, they are doing what every other Army unit does in garrsion -- training. We have many of the same training requirements as just about any other Army unit, to include PT. But most of our training is in Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) tasks -- rehearsing music.
Daily rehearsals with the larger groups are followed in the afternoon with small group rehearsals and also the myriad "additional duties" that every...read more
