By: Eddie Taylor
I attended the Steve Harvey Foundation Mentoring Weekend and it really opened my eyes on why programs like this are needed. Young men from the ages of 13-18 years old were selected out of 4,000 applicants. 100 were selected for this special weekend with outstanding leaders throughout our communities. The army led the way with at least 20 different primary mentors, and one guest speaker. Looking at the look in some kids eyes, you felt the hunger of wanting guidance...read more

By: Stephen Champlin
Today’s class discussion was about professionalism and when it occurs in the army. There was a bit of talk amongst the classmates as we tried to flesh out the instant that that happens for Soldiers. Lawyers pass the bar, doctors become board certified, and computer programmers are awarded certificates upon passing exams that reflect their proficiency in a certain area of expertise, but when does a Soldier become a professional, or start to think of themselves as a professional?...read more

I will post more as the course continues. The assignment was as follows:

I didn’t have very lofty goals when I first joined the Army. I wanted to get away from home as quickly as I could. I received my commission last Friday with twenty classmates. I have entered the USAR as a Transportation Officer. I am entering service as a platoon leader in the 443rd Transportation Company here in Omaha. My first battle assembly is in June, but I don’t attend TBOLC until September. I am a ROTC cadet at the University of Toledo, in my third year. This year I am learning about OPORD's and preparing myself for LDAC. This weekend we had our JFTX with Bowling Green. I felt this was really good training integrating us with other people we have not work with before, BG had different ideas to bring to the table and although it was cold and raining all weekend the learning experience was amazing. The Story

It has been a while since my first post, but a lot has happened, hence the time away from Army Strong Stories.

I finished basic combat training on October 14th and later finished Advanced Individual Training on December 1st, 2010. Not even two weeks out of training, I received an email from my Unit Administrator basically asking if I would like to compete in the Best Warrior Competition. Well let's see... Where to begin? I was born. I grew up.

I enlisted into the Army on February 5, 2010 and I didn't ship for basic training until August 4th 2010. In that span of time I was very unfit and quite nervous about what I had committed myself to, for what seems like an eternity of an enlist period to my mother (roughly 7 years left; IRR included). I don't think I fully understood what I had committed myself to despite all the research and...read more
